Indoor or outdoor: finding the right partner for each outing

Published 10 September 2026Lire ce guide en français

A good gym partner and a good crag partner do not ask for quite the same things. Many climbers learn this by taking someone outdoors after things went well indoors, and discovering a gap in self-sufficiency or in goals. Here is what separates the two settings.

Indoors: availability and level

Indoors, the environment is controlled. Bolts are in place, the landing meets standards, there is no weather and no approach walk. What matters for a gym partner:

  • Availability that overlaps yours. This is the first criterion, well ahead of the rest.
  • A compatible level in the discipline you practise, so the chosen routes suit both.
  • Reliable belay discipline. Essential, but the range of required skills stays limited: belay on top rope or lead, run the checks.

A gym partner can be found quickly. That is the main use case for an app like Altivio: spot active climbers at your gym, at the right level, available when you are.

Outdoors: self-sufficiency and judgement

Outside, the list grows considerably:

  • Rope work: building and cleaning an anchor, rappelling, bailing, ascending a rope. At least one of the two needs to be solid.
  • Reading the terrain: rock quality, spotting bolts, managing rope drag, choosing the descent line.
  • Gear: who brings what, quickdraws, a rope matched to the height, emergency kit.
  • Managing the day: weather, timing, carpooling, a plan B if the sector is soaked or crowded.
  • Aligned goals: a project to work or a volume of easy routes make for a very different day.

A crag partnership builds more slowly, often starting from a gym partner where trust is already there.

Moving from one to the other

The classic progression: you climb together indoors, you get to know each other, then you do a first easy crag outing at a beginner-friendly site with nothing at stake. That is where you see whether your skills complement each other and whether your rhythms match.

If you are new to outdoor climbing, the best option is a supervised club outing before heading out independently with a partner. See getting into climbing in Belgium.

On Altivio, you can specify your discipline and your gyms, which helps identify gym partners first. The move to the crag is decided afterwards, between you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same partner for the gym and the crag? Often yes, once trust is established indoors and you have done a first easy outing together. The reverse is riskier.

I am a beginner, how do I find a partner for outdoor climbing? Start with a club outing. Going out independently requires at least one of the two to be competent with rope work.

Is Altivio useful for outdoor climbing? It mainly helps you find gym partners, who then become crag partners. Create an account.
